Root canal treatment (RCT) is a procedure used to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth rather than extracting it. The damaged area of the tooth (the pulp) is removed and cleaned and disinfected before being filled and sealed. A cracked tooth, a deep cavity, repeated dental treatment to the tooth, or trauma to the tooth are the most common causes of pulp damage. The term "root canal" refers to the cleaning of the canals inside the root of a tooth. Inside our teeth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue that aid in the development of the tooth's root. When this pulp is damaged, it degrades and infectious bacteria spread within the pulp chamber, frequently resulting in an infection or abscessed tooth. Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic therapy, is required to treat diseased or abscessed teeth.
